Dirty English is the first book I’ve read by Ilsa Madden-Mills, but isn’t likely to be the last. Pride & Prejudice is my all-time favorite book, so hearing that Dirty English was inspired by P&P caught my interest. That said, I knew from the blurb it was going to be nothing like my fave.
Ms. Madden-Mills has given us an all new version of Elizabeth Bennett. This one has been hurt, damaged… untrusting. She is not willing to risk being hurt again, so she sticks with one night stands, never letting a man close.
No Mr. Darcy in this one, but there is the yummy hero, Declan. He’s British, an underground fighter, and also loves classic literature. He’s also exactly what Elizabeth wants to avoid. Dax, Declan’s twin, is such an enjoyable side character. I really want to see him get his own story too. The twins are super close and their relationship really added depth to the characters.
There were a few unanswered questions that kept me from giving it 5 stars, namely issues with Elizabeth’s two ‘best’ friends and Declan’s father. And for me, the ending was a bit rushed. Overall, still a solid, enjoyable 4 star read that I would highly recommend.
