Character Interview: Aunt Clara from Witness Protection by @CarolynLaRoche #romanticsuspense

Thank you for joining us today. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Clara James. Detective Logan James from Witness Protection is my nephew but as far as I am concerned he is as much my son as his cousins Kaiden and Keegan, seeing as how I raised him.

How did Logan come to live with you?

Logan’s father, my good for nothing brother in-law, had a horrible temper. One day, when Logan was in middle school, his father snapped and killed Logan’s mother. That poor child had no one in this world so I brought him home with me after the funeral and he never left.

It must have been difficult enough being left to raise your two sons on your own. What was it like raising three boys?

Once you have two boys, a third just means bigger laundry piles and longer grocery lists. The three boys are close in age and grew up the best of friends. Even now, when one is upset or in trouble, the other two rush to his assistance, no matter what the problem is.

Have you always lived on top of a mountain?

Oh no. When the boys were in school we lived in town, close to the schools and parks. Once they all went out in to the world, I took the money from my husband’s life insurance, God rest his soul, and moved to the mountain.

Why a mountain?

I like my space. I like to know that if anything happens out there in the world my boys and their families will always have a safe, protected space to return to whenever they want. The world can be a harsh place, it’s nice to have our own little oasis to take refuge in.

Upon first meeting Angelina, what was your impression of her?

Well, I met her with a shot gun in my hand so that should tell you something! Seriously though, I greet everyone with my shotgun- it was nothing personal towards Angelina. My first impression of her wasn’t fabulous. She looked like a scared little girl. I had no idea until later just how strong and determined she was. It also didn’t take long to see how deeply she had affected Logan.

As a mother, you must have certain expectations for the women your sons choose to marry.

I want them to be happy, first and foremost. I did try hard to teach them all to choose carefully. Good looks can come and go but a woman with a brain and a heart will always have those things. It’s tough to carry on a conversation with a nit wit. A good friend of mine likes to say you can fix ugly but there ain’t nothing you can do about stupid.

Does Angelina live up to those expectations?

Angelina is smart and resourceful. She comes from a good family and was raised to be an independent thinker. She also loves my nephew the same way I loved my husband. Not only can I see it in her eyes every time she looks at him but she risked her own life to save his.

How about your sons? Have either of them settled down?

Both of my boys are very involved in their jobs but I still hold out hope that they won’t let me die without giving me grandchildren!

Witness Protection is out now! Pick it up on Amazon. And look for Kaiden’s story, Homeland Security, soon!
